Connoisseur of Malvern created an extremely limited edition of four topiary sculptures under the series name of Nature in the Round. Each topiary is approximately 24” (61 cm) high, was an edition of only 10, and depicts each classic seasonal flower with incredible realism.
This is the Spring Topiary (sculpture name still being researched) displaying yellow and white narcissi along with blue grape hyacinths, Muscari armeniacum.
The Summer Topiary features pink wild roses.
Amber Fall is the autumn topiary.
The underside of each pot bears several legends along the edge: Nature in the Round, Topiaries for all Seasons, the name of the sculpture design, the sculpture number within the edition, fine bone china, Made in England, and of course the Connoisseur name and butterfly logo.
Even the layer of porcelain “mulch” topping each pot looks real!
The winter topiary Scarlet Masquerade was offered at auction along with an unfinished counterpart in plain white bisque. Some of the leaves had not yet been added, which allows some of the spherical base of the topiary to be seen, whereas in the finished version this is completely hidden.
A set of these topiaries was on display at Brielle Galleries in New Jersey; they were one of very few retailers of Connoisseur of Malvern in the USA. At the time of their introduction, each individual topiary was priced at approximately $10,000 USD… thus $40,000 for the set. Incomprehensibly, in July 2014 a complete set of four was offered on eBay (USA) for only $3995…. supposedly in mint condition!
